The Story of Ceilao
Our Indian Ocean Island home was named Ceilao in 1505, then Zeylan, next Ceylon and finally Sri Lanka, meaning Resplendent Island. Characterized by a natural profusion of biodiversity, Sri Lanka is home to an ancient civilization with a history of over two millennia. We have welcomed explorers and merchants from every corner of the world. Amongst them, Venetian merchant-adventurer Marco Polo who described Ceylon as, 'for its size, the finest island in the world.'
That acclaim is owed as much to the taste of Sri Lanka's produce as to her extraordinary natural diversity. From the southwestern coastal plains to the central mountainous region and the low-lying northern region, Sri Lanka has extraordinary diversity that is manifest in seven agro-ecological zones that produce the world's finest tea, cinnamon, cashew, rubber and a host of other spices and ayurveda herbs.
